Sniper Fire

Previously, I had suggested that Sen. Obama might need divine intervention to overcome the Reverend Wright hysteria. The Lord works in mysterious ways, and it seems He sent an Easter miracle in the person of Gov. Bill Richardson. Richardson's endorsement was important on several levels, including his influence with Latinos as a border state governor and his high level of regard as a statesman. But most importantly, as he presented a memorable image with the Senator at a packed Oregon campaign rally, was his personal political courage, something that Sen. Obama seems to inspire a lot of these days. Richardson owes his career to the Clintons and served in two positions in the Clinton cabinet, but it's one thing to owe your loyalty to Bill, and another to owe it to Hill, and Richardson chose to do what he felt was best for the country and endure the wrath of the Clintons. He spoke of the anguish that went into the decision, but claimed Obama to be a "Once-in-a-lifetime leader."

Like Richardson, I was more than moved by Obama's speech on racial reconciliation. I was shocked that a leading presidential candidate would speak up to me instead of down about a matter of great importance; something to which I am unaccustomed. I disagree with some of the pundits that it was another Gettysburg Address, but it was a thoughtful and challenging statement that rebuked his pastor's divisive words and called the nation to a higher purpose in confronting racial resentments on all sides. This is what caused Bill Richardson to cut his vacation short and, as the old saw goes, come to the aide of his party. His belief in Obama's leadership outweighed his loyalty to the Clintons, and his endorsement came during the Obama campaign's darkest hour. The fact that Richardson resembles Horatio Sans only ads to the endearing candor of his remarks.

At first, the oily Clinton strategist Mark Penn tried to air off the Richardson endorsement as ineffective, but the old reliable Clinton Yakuza, James "Snakehead" Carville, soon offered up the real and nasty resentment. By saying Richarson was a "Judas who sold out for thirty pieces of silver," Carville put the proper Easter spin on it, and managed to imply that Richardson was somehow on the take at the same time. Bill was out on the stump looking less like an admired former president and more like Spiro Agnew. And when it appeared as if the pastor controversy, after a week of endless reruns, was on the front burner only on Fox News, did Hillary decide to weigh in on the matter. Just when you believe she might do the decent thing, she re-inflames the conflict about her Democratic opponent to detract from her own embarrassing gaffe.

Hillary's battle stories about her tour of war-torn Bosnia show that it's not enough for her to be the next Maggie Thatcher; she sees herself as Douglas MacArthur. But then Ronald Reagan always wanted to be the Duke, too. Her memories of corkscrew landings under sniper fire and running for armored vehicles didn't look as dramatic in the actual footage where Hillary and Chelsea accepted kisses and poems from an eight year old girl greeting them on the tarmac. How lame must your story be to be refuted by Sheryl Crow and Sinbad? At least Sheryl Crow once had the guts to stand up to Karl Rove. Down here in the South, when someone embellishes a story with a straight face and then is caught in a gross exaggeration, we have a name for them; liars. Hillary blamed sleep deprivation on causing her to "misspeak," but she looked bright-eyed in her St. Patricks' Day shamrock scarf when she related her war story like a Vietnam vet with the Thousand Yard Stare. Was she also sleep deprived on the other two occasions when she mis-remembered? You can almost measure the size of Hillary's lies by the number of times she says, "you know," in the explanation. "It was, you know, a long day."

This exaggeration over Bosnia, or her role in the Irish Peace Accord, or her consistent "opposition" over NAFTA, would all be forgivable as election tactics were it not for the unyielding ugliness of her campaign. Clinton's supporters say she is receiving tougher press scrutiny because she is a woman. I maintain that the media has allowed this unwinnable, disintegrating campaign to continue exactly because Hillary is the first viable woman candidate for president and it is too good a story to extinguish with reality. The math says that Clinton cannot catch Obama in elected delegates and her last hope is to paint him as one of the south side Chicago Blackstone Rangers and a danger to civilization. Then, with a series of primary victories, the superdelegates will turn to her, Hill of Arc, to deliver the Democrats from this wild radical.

Four weeks until the Pennsylvania primary is a long time for Obama to endure the death by a thousand cuts, and recent events show there is no depth so low that the Clintons will not go. Even the hapless Lanny Davis, so eloquent in defense of President Clinton while he was under siege, is sent out to shill for Hill and trash Barack. It has become embarrassing to watch people you once admired debase themselves in the name of loyalty to a political faction. While Obama's campaign seems to elevate people, Clinton's diminishes them. And even though there are not enough delegates left for her to win the nomination, Hillary will keep clawing forward, like Jason Voorhees or Freddie Krueger, until someone puts the metaphorical wooden stake in the heart of her campaign, if there, in fact, is one. Is there not a Democrat with the influence to face down Bill Clinton, or a group of senior party officials who can step in and declare "enough?" If not, Hillary will continue this kamikaze campaign, sending shrapnel in every direction, right up until the election of President McCain.

Many thanks to Wintermute of The Daily Docket for the improvements and upgrades to this blog. Because I had inadvertently enabled a comment monitoring system, several comments were omitted from the last post. I apologise and hope I have corrected the problem. RJH

You allow Obama to brush off the Jeremiah Wright issue by merely saying that he disagrees with his divisive statements. Words are easy. I would still like to know why he remained at a church that presents such flawed views. The fact that he sat under the tutelage of a proponent of black liberation theolgy for 20 years is disturbing to me. After all, birds of a feather flock together. Obama must carry the seeds of that type of indoctrination within him. I could not possibly vote for a man like that without knowing more about his heart. Words are cheap and a good actor could be a trojan horse...something of a Farrahan-light perhaps. Would yoy vote for someone who was a member of a white supremist church for 20 years even though he disavowed their beliefs while running for office. I already know the answer to that question. And, you are right about Hillary. She has to be one of the most bogus and potentially dangerous peole in the country. She has the integrity of a Charles Manson.

nice blog again, they all are. It really is disturbing when, as you
said, people like Lanny Davis for whom you had respect, gets into the
ditch with the Clintons but nobody has lost the amount of respect that
Bill has as far as I'm concerned. I heard him say yesterday that Obama
was trying to disenfranchise voters by not wanting Florida and Mich.
votes to count. When the Dem. party said the Florida primary votes
wouldn't count 6 months ago, it was infuriating since the decision to
move up our primary was made by republicans who controlled the state.
There was nothing we could do about that but there was something that
could have been done about the partys' decision to penalize Democrats
for a decision made by republicans and the one person that could have
done it was the most influential person in the party, Bill Clinton.
Where was he when we needed him? Oh well. On another not, why doesn't
McCain go ahead and name Leiberman his running mate or have him
surgically removed from his right shoulder?

At some point you liberals and n-words are going to have to let go of the past. I know that is not likely, because it is too profitable for you race hustlers to hold on to past grievances. Even Obama said that Wright's error is that he is still reacting to the past as though nothing has changed since 1964. You can use the sins of the past to justify bad behavior in the present for the next thousand years. It is like telling someone who had a bad home life that he is doomed to misery and failure for the rest of his life. Some have the strength of spirit to overcome. Evidently, those who don't become liberals.

Was I over the top? Yes. Sorry, for any readers along with you, Anonymous, who might have been appropriately bruised by my slightly seedy non-expurgated spew out of my bad morning and foul mood. I was responding to the focus on Obama's minister. I guess, appropriately or not, the attempt by the media and by individuals and groups to find any scratch in the paint on the chassis and call the car a lemon makes me nauseous.......especially when perspective is so badly needed in a world where a lot of people who are not me are sicker, and hungrier than I ever want to be. Wouldn't be so bad if the decisions by people of doubtful integrity and intellect weren't responsible for the environment that spawns all that unneeded pain. Unneeded pain, structural violence (Paul Farmer's words)can be dealt with. Need to see it. The problems and the chance that there is a person who can see it is a bigger deal than a scratch in the chassis. There I go again.

In the early 80s as a seminarian I heard James Cone speak at LeMoyne-Owen. Dr. Cone originated Black Theology & was Rev. Jeremiah Wright's mentor. He taught a black nationalistic theology...with no love for the caucasian persuasion. Cone asked if there was a white person who would like to speak. I did. I said, "The Sunday before... I had been reprimanded for mentioning MLK in a sermon in a north Mississippi church which had turned away Blacks from worship in the past. Cone said that MLK was misguided about intergration & that the church did black folks a favor. He told me to get the hell out of that church as well and that my only hope of salvation was to repent from my whiteness and to join a black church... if they would have my sorry white ass. He spoke boldly in his Michael Jackson voice. He then asked me to meet with him after the lecture. We had lunch. He apologized for his remarks & said that good preachers say outrageous things to make a point. I told him no need to apologize... but that I would stay at my church...repent of my whiteness & be a minister of reconciliation. I suggested that he repent of his black nationalism & do the same. He laughed. I hate racism. I hate it when I see it in the Clinton campaign. I hate it when I see it in the Obama campaign. I really hate it when I see that sneaky bastard called racism in my mirror. I would like to repeat a statement that I made previously that got lost in the shuffle. I said that I used to think that Randy was too hard on Bush. I now think that Bush may be the worst thing that has ever happened to America. I guess this amounts to a confession. May I receive absolution?

Anonymous said...

RED ALERT!!!Do a Google search for black liberation theology. Study it and then be very alarmed that Obama has been seeped in this so-called religious philosophy for over 20 years. He may not have heard certain specific sermons from Jeremiah Wright, but he knows full well that their doctrinal position is black liberation theology. This teaching raises racism to the highest level posible, making racism the basis of biblical teaching. This heresy claims that the white man is corporately the Antichrist and that the true God stands four-sqaure against him. It goes downhill from there. See for yourself, the proponents of this teaching don't mince words.

Let me get this straight. For the last 15 years you were positive the Clintons were the greatest thing in politics. Maybe Bill chased the ladies too much, but the good out numbered the bad. Now you see the real Bill & Hill. What follows is you are positive you now see the real Obama. Wake up it is all about power and blank the country. Obama is the Democratic Reagan. I should put Bill in that category too. They succeeded because when they spoke to an audience the audience believed them. It would be nice if he had accomplished something other than win a Senate seat because his opponent went to jail. That also says a lot for our system. I am not saying Obama won’t be a good President, I just don’t know and the way campaigns in the US are run it is a crapshoot. Once in my life I would like to see someone win who has the Country as their first priority, and not worried about getting re-elected or the power that goes with politics.

Hey Brother! You write well and interesting. I have one question if you would like to answer? I know that Elvis Presley was a born again christian, but when did he take Jesus into His life?

Anonymous said...

Face it. America is dead in the water and there will be no political solution. Those who have 'sight' say it's time to head for the hills. The urban areas are dangerous now, but just wait. The trouble has only just begun.

Anonymous said...

To the one who mentioned absolution...all is forgiven! To the one who mentioned Elvis...well, he & Sam Cook probably got intergration rolling faster than most preachers...but salvation is not an object like a suitcase that we carry around with a stopwatch attached in order to time conversions! salvation is not just something that happened...it's something that is happening and it will bring change & hope & it will bring the final consummation of all things in God's love. We are the objects or subjects to bring G*D'S love to all nations. The word in greek is ETHNOS...ethnics. I voted for Barach in the primaries. I like the man but I am concerned about his church...they are (Dr. James) Coneheads...which means they are anti-semetic as well as GDers of America...but there is a bright side. We won't have to hear Rev. Wright sing that Lee Greenwood song. To Mr. Natural ...never give up! To Randy...keep up a great epistle. Love the new look!PS I ain't saying Trinity Church is evil... I am just having a hard time juggling his beliefs with that of his church...from that church Oprah walked...and I mean out! Peace to all Ethnos...love one another. FatherFarken

Let's see..you say that Trinity Church (Obama's church) is not evil even though according to black liberation theology, to which they adhere, the white race is the Antichrist. I think that any church that took the position that the black race is the Antichrist would be excoriated as the very epitome of evil. There is a HUGE double standard in our culture.

Anonymous said...

OK...I didn't want to condemn Trinity Church. After all, my girl, Maya Angelou, with her song flung up to heaven, came to the church's rescue...but wasn't she in cahoots with Malcolm?...HMMMM! OK, let me try this one. Trinity is a UCC church-the most inclusive of all the mainline protestant churches... but maybe they are so inclusive they are now including bigoted African(anti)American revolutionaries that will "only accept the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy"(Dr James H. Cone). HMMM! Dr Cone sez that "What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love." And that's Cone on a good day. Read him & weep! Don't get me wrong! We need LIBERATION! We need open minds & open hearts and I know that Thomas Jefferson said,"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then, is a good thing, & is as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical" but this is ridiculous & quite destructive. My heart is wrenched because I see in Obama such a unifying figure. It doesn't make sense. If he doesn't pull away from Trinity it may bite him on the butt later or even worse...take a big chunk out of ours. Well, he has only made two bad choices...Trinity and ...uh...bowling! After reading this you may agree with this Quote from Cone "It is time for the white man to shut up and listen to the black man." Shalom to the BAH ANONYMOUS & ALL ETHNOS! FatherFarken

Anonymous said...

Thanks for that expose, Father Farken. These folks won't listen to me, but they may listen to you. They all should do some research into the teachings of James Cone who was the mentor of Jeremiah Wright, who in turn is the mentor of Barack Obama who just might be president someday.

Let's do a thought experiment. Pretend that it was discovered that John McCain was a member for 20 years of a church that was the white equivalent of Obama's church. The pastor was filmed repeatedly shouting 'G-D- Africa. We are succumbing more and more to the cancer of black power. The blacks have been plotting insurrection against America (or imagine any statement that would be the equivalent of Wright's Aids rant)'. Also, it was disclosed that one of the doctrines of the church is that blacks are corporately the Antichrist. In our thought experiment, ask yourself how far McCain would get with his candidacy. My answer is that in this country he would probably not even be elected dog catcher, and would probably even have a hard time getting a job. He would be demonized into oblivion. Why do we have such a double standard in this country? Anyone care to explain this to me? I already know that this type of question causes liberals to run for cover, because this double standard one of the ruses that liberals use to advance their agenda.

Let's don't forget SPUTNIK's words that Obama "did rebuke Wright's divisive words and called the nation to a higher purpose in confronting racial resentments on all sides." Maybe Obama really is smart as a serpent and innocent as a dove. Ignatius Reilly

Well, duh!! He has to disavow Jeremiah Wright's teachings now that he has been caught red-handed. Philosophical birds of a feather flock together. I want to know why Jeremiah Wright's positions (black liberation theology and his other extreme views) were of such vital importance to Obama that he stuck with the man for 20 years and even called Wright his spiritual mentor. If you don't see a red flag in this, then you are either blind or don't care. We are talking about a man who has not been properly vetted becoming the president of the country. As far as I am concerned, he is not worth the risk. Like someone else has already said, if McCain had Obama's baggage he wouldn't be electable in any capacity. I am beginning to think that a lot of people just want a black to be elected at any cost. I think that this is what Ferarro had in mind when she made the comment that got her fired from Clinton's campaign.

A rhetorical question: What is more bogus, degrading, humiliating, and absurd than American politics? It has all of the dignity of a middle school food fight. Can it possibly be a reflection of our culture written large? If so, then we have about as much dignity as the three stooges, probably less. It is paradoxical to see apparently bright people taking it so seriously. Our problems lie so much deeper than politics. Politics wouldn't be so shameful if we could come up with a few honorable people to run for office in this country, but apparently that is too much to expect.

My dear Mr. Natural! In each of us is a child who is inherently religious, not in the sense of acknowledging the Father, nor yet recognizing the Son, but in a manner that is permeated by the presence of the Spirit, through whom the energies of G*d penetrate the world & render it profound, beautiful & naturally meaningful. This child in us is naturally religious because it serves something greater. It hears a call that is in the world but not of it, & whatever aspect of the world it "puts" this call upon, it is really the call of the Spirit & this child answers it. It ventures forth; for this, to use Kierkegaard's phrase, has a thirst for the prodigious & mysterious. This child goes out of self & is ecstatic{ex.static). However Mr. Natural, there is inherent to the falleness of existence a condition that disables this true child. This condition causes it to get stuck, to recoil like a snake & strikes & bites out of fear & anger with all sense of life's call to something greater body-slammed & replaced by strategies designed to feed, protect & aggrandize the self. People only change if they are truly religious in the way a that the child is originally religious: in love with the world, & full of that authentic existence that can only come from reaching out of oneself, in interest & concern. Those people who retain a spark of this religiousness, & who therefore still serve something greater than themselves, will because of that 'something' open their selfishness to life & healing. Only such person will repent of selfishness & let life show them that it is wrong as a basis for existence...that is why Mr. Natural I am asking for your vote this Fall...not for me but for one of these three flawed candidates. All very gifted...all very flawed. If in your conscience you see that one candidate is better for this country than the other...if even only by a smidgen...get off your dead ass & vote... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! Peace to America! Peace to all ethnos! Peace to Mr. Natural!

In fact, what I see fills me with disgust and sometimes even loathing. I have to believe that things were not always like this. I just want the people who lead and that I am expected to follow to behave with a little bit of integrity and possibly even some dignity. Is that to much to ask? Things being as they are, I sometimes wonder how folks can get so involved over something that is (currently) so bogus. I am not dissing high ideals. I just don't see much evidence of high ideals in most of our so-called leaders. By the way, from what you just wrote I could follow and respect a man like you.

Oh, and one more thing, Father Farken. What makes you think that my ass is dead. I always vote. It's just that I have learned not to respect politicians from years of observation. In fact, I would say that folks who are overly impressed with politicians are either not paying attention or they are not very discriminating. Apparently, politics like government is a necessary evil. And, I am neither a slacker nor particularly selfish. Do you know me? Perhaps you presume too much. Let me add that I respect you even though I don't know you. I have to respect a person before I can follow him/her.

The only thing lower than a politician is a lawyer. However, most politicians are lawyers, so that is a double whammy. They are the spawn of Satan who was the very first lawyer and the Father of Lies (hear that Hillary?). You wonder why America is in such bad shape? Do the math. There is no truth outside the gates of Eden. Dylan had it figured out a long time ago.

Lift up your heart my friend. Like Sputnik once told me,"Rabbi! We've all been hoodwinked and bamboozeled!" (very Malcolmesque) Sometimes when you're screwed you need a good lawyer as well as your Mother Joneses and your Lincolns, FDRs, Trumans and whoever to change the situation. That's why we read Sputnik's blog. Loose it about the lawyers. You might just need one when they foreclose on your trailer(I kid!). The late Bishop G.E. Patterson once told me that he had a Jewish lawyer pleading his case before the heavenly courts. I've always wondered what that nice man did to piss off the heavenly courts! I think that friar was trying to tell us to get involved-the spirit is waiting. Let's rebuild God's world and our wounded country. Listen to Sputnik! He will not steer you wrong! Shalom alechem! A quote by Sheryl Crowe in response to a question about today's protest music relative to that of the 60's/70's: "I don't know if music can change things, but it can move molecules. We have to start somewhere". Today's music may suck, but as we would have said in the old days, her comment is 'cosmic'. She probably had a toke of some good bud. Straight thinking tends to be too linear to get to a hyperbolic place like that.

Hillary recently gave a speech in which she said that everyone needs to invest massive effort to raise the standard of living for the bottom rung of the socio-economic ladder. It seems to me that since there are no longer any de jure roadblocks, there are extensive affirmative action programs, all kinds of programs and scholarships for minorities, and practically everyone begging for even remotely qualified minorities to enter their schools or places of employment, that the ones who need to put forth more effort are the indigent people themselves. A good way to begin the proposed uplift of minorities would be to get serious about improving public education and reducing the 70% of them that are born out of wedlock. But that would take some restraint and effort from the individual, wouldn't it. It seems that liberals aren't interested in personal responsibility and increasing individual effort. Temperant, responsible, hard-working people don't need a lot of government handouts, or much government at all for that matter. It ensures more votes to cater to human weakness through promises of handouts. Doing things that would actually strengthen and empower the individual would put the Democrats out of business. They don't seem to have much faith in the potential of the human spirit to become strengthened and to stand on its own two feet. They take a collectivist approach to everything that leaves the individual human spirit in a state of dependency. Do they do this intentionally and with malice of forethought?

Anonymous said...

You (anonymous 10:46) are stating the obvious. No honest liberal would deny what you have just said. You have just articulated the name of their game without the smoke and mirrors. No they aren't interested in empowering the individual. They are interested in diminishing the individual because he gets in the way of the goals of collectivism. You have come to the wrong blog. Most likely your comment will get no responses, because your thinking is alien to their purposes.
